PROGRAMS

Feline Foster Care

By opening up your home to foster pets, you’re not only helping to save lives, you’re providing the individual attention and love those desperately need.
JCARL's cat foster program is designed to keep underage kittens and nursing moms out of the shelter setting while they help their kittens grow big and strong. We also look for fosters willing to take on adult cats that need more one on one attention than the shelter provides, as well as hospice fosters.
Foster homes are asked to provide care for the animals, as well as transportation to and from veterinary appointments as needed, and transportation to meet prospective adopters. Care for foster animals includes feeding accordi
ng to size and needs, exercise according to energy levels, and lots of play time and positive socialization.
Although fostering is a lot of work, it is a very rewarding experience. By participating in this program, you are saving lives and helping many animals who may not have otherwise had a chance find the families they’ve been longing for. Through fostering, we can work together to Save Them All.

Canine Foster Care

JCARL's dog foster program is designed to help dogs that aren’t thriving in the shelter setting to get a better chance at finding a forever home.  Many of the dogs who need foster homes require extra care and attention, which shelters often don’t have the staff or resources to provide.  However, in a loving foster home, every dog can get the individual attention he or she needs to find a forever family.  By opening up your home to foster pets, you’re not only helping to save lives, you’re providing the individual attention and love those desperately need.

Barn Cat Program

JCARL occasionally runs across cats that may be feral or semi-feral that would not be suitable as indoor pets. We do not adopt out indoor cats as barn cats. Unsocialized cats prefer the independent life with limited interaction with people. Each cat will have varying degrees of tolerance for humans. Some may prefer to hang out near you and others may prefer to peek out from hiding when you are near. Their preference for interaction may change over time and with consistent positive encounters, some may cats may form bonds with their caregivers. Most outdoor cats will form close bonds with other animals and other cats living with them. We prefer to not adopt barn cats as the only outdoor pet for this reason. We believe these cats deserve shelter, food and water provided daily, veterinarian care and the opportunity for mental enrichment that an outdoor home provides.
Adopting a barn cat is giving an unsocial cat a second chance. If you have a working barn, enclosed barn, safe/protected outbuilding, warehouse, factory, or other environment you feel will provide a safe and comfortable home please fill out our application, there are cats who need you.
Minimal care for your cats include: daily food and water, safe refuge from the elements and a means of escaping predators/a predator free area, frequent monitoring and willingness to vaccinate/provide veterinarian care as needed. A happy and healthy cat is much more likely to stick around. The cats should feel safe and receive adequate care or they will leave and find someone else!
Adoption fees are donation based! All money donated goes towards spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, medical care and microchip for each barn cat.
